Chapter 13

Grace wished she could erase the hollow expression on Lord Stewart’s face from her memory. And now, she’d do just about anything to soften the blank, emotionless one.

They arrived at the ball together. She walked in on his arm. But he said precious little, and when he did, it was in highly proper tones.

They both met Prince George together. He had much to say to Morley and then polite things to say to Lord Stewart. When the prince turned to her, he smiled. “Now here is a bit of fresh air in my ballroom. Please enjoy yourself, and if you have a set, I’d love to dance.” He bowed over her hand with a charming expression.

For a moment, she was completely breathless and in shock. Lord Stewart pulled her hand close to his side in a gentle nudge.

“Oh yes, thank you for the honor. My third set is free.”

“Third it is.” He smiled again, his eyes lingering as she moved on.

“Did that just happen?” She sucked in her breath, leaning closer to Lord Stewart in a loud whisper.

“Yes, and perhaps you should stand up a little straighter and act like the noble you are.”

His tone was not exactly harsh but definitely not chummy. A moment of irritation surged inside her, and she did stand taller and considerably farther away from him. “Yes, thank you.”

“Very good. Now, remember who you are, Miss Grace, and act in that knowledge. The ballroom is at your feet.” He gestured with his hand to a room full of people.

The master of ceremonies took a card with their names. “Lord Morley, Miss Grace Standish, Lord Stewart.”

With the announcement of his name, more than a few female eyes turned in their direction. For the first time, Grace considered her friendly vicar through the eyes of the ladies of the ton.

And she was astounded.

Women approached. He had not yet noticed or seen or acknowledged them, but they were coming. And all had a look, a certain interest, that Grace could not deny. She wished to tug him closer again.

But then Morley closed the gap between them. “If I might steal Miss Grace for a moment, some introductions to start us off would be highly useful.”

“Excellent.” Lord Stewart nodded, a perceptible but small motion of his head, and then he turned toward the crowd of women who were nearly upon him.

So he had seen them.

The closest clung to his arm immediately, fanning herself and laughing with bright smiles. And she introduced three others. All of which were equally pleased.

“What is happening to Lord Stewart?”

Morley laughed. “Did you not know? They are calling him the Handsome Vicar or something. He’s all the talk right now. Ask Kate about it when she comes. I think she even did a drawing of him.”

Grace could not take her eyes away from Lord Stewart. He was laughing and charming in a whole new way. The women blushed and flustered and primped around him like a bunch of unfurling peacocks, and all at once, Grace wanted nothing more to do with it.
